Solar Company Sol-Up USA Fights Back Against NV Energy

LAS VEGAS, May 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Sol-Up USA, a solar company at the forefront of the fight between Nevada solar companies and NV Energy, is expanding their efforts to fight against the restrictions NV Energy is attempting to put on the residents of Nevada.

“We’ve taken multiple steps to address this issue and make our state government do the right thing,” said Frank Rieger, CEO of Sol-Up USA. “I doesn’t make sense for the government to back something that literally takes thousands of jobs out of our economy.”

This issue concerns net-metering and a cap that NV Energy is fighting to keep as low as possible. Net-metering refers to the process in which solar customers receive credits for the energy being put back into the grid whenever the customer produces more than they use. NV Energy then sells this back to its clients. If the net-metering cap is reached, NV Energy will stop buying solar energy, removing the incentive for solar customers and causing potentially thousands to lose their jobs.

“Without net-metering, it’s more difficult for a customer to decide to go solar,” said Tu Anh Tran, CTO at Sol-Up USA. “There’s no reason for NV Energy to stop buying solar energy from customers, they still make a profit from selling it back to Nevada’s residents. This is a clear case of a corporation trying to kill competition.”

So far, Sol-Up USA has taken the following steps in an attempt to persuade the state government to side with solar companies as opposed to NV Energy:

  • Sol-Up USA went to meet with state legislators in early April and ask for their support for Pace financing and Green Bank, which are instrumental tools to solar contractors.

  • They were a large part of the rally outside of NV Energy’s headquarters on April 22.

  • They wrote a letter to John Ellison, Speaker of the Nevada State Assembly, and received a response in which states he has no opinion on the matter, which is unacceptable in Rieger’s eyes.

“How can the Speaker of the State Assembly not have an opinion on the direction energy is going in his state?” said Rieger. “This affects thousands of people, it is very strange that he has put no thought into this issue. If he doesn’t have an opinion, we need to tell him to.”

Local power company warns consumers about higher electric bills

electric

HAMPTON S.C. (WJCL) — As a result of a cold February, Palmetto Electric is alerting consumers to the effects of the cooler weather on energy consumption. Palmetto Electric services Hampton, Beaufort and Jasper counties.  “With the cold temperatures comes increased usage and higher electric bills,” said Berl Davis, president and CEO of the utility.

Palmetto Electric saw a significant increase in both peak demand and energy usage in February 2015 compared to February 2014.  “Peak demand increased by over 23 percent and energy sales were up by 22 percent,” according to Davis.  February 2015 was 57 percent colder than February 2014 and 52 percent colder than normal for the month based on local weather data.

To help offset the increases caused by cold weather Palmetto Electric recommends a thermostat setting of 68 degrees in the winter.  For every degree above this setting consumers will add approximately 4-8 percent to their heating cost.  “Consumers should be especially cautious about not switching their thermostat to the ‘Emergency Heat’ setting as this will cause usage to skyrocket,” emphasized Davis. Each winter we determine that many high bills result from consumers mistakenly switching from the “Heat” setting to “Emergency Heat.”

Other energy saving tips include:

  • Set thermostats at 55 degrees in a home that is vacant for a week or longer.

  • Caulk around all doors and windows. Loose or cracked caulking should be removed or replaced.

  • Weather-stripping is a real key to preventing heat loss. Doors and windows should be sealed to prevent drafts. Door bottoms are also culprits; install inexpensive “sweeps” on doors to keep out the cold. Don’t forget to weather-strip your attic access.

  • Central heating systems should be given an annual cleaning and tune-up by a qualified technician.

  • Keep air filters clean. The air filter of a central heating system should be replaced once a month during the heating season if a disposable filter is used.

  • Have your chimney checked by a qualified chimney sweep and check your fireplace damper to be sure it opens and closes properly.

Consumers can view more information on ways to help keep electric bills down during cold weather by visiting Palmetto Electric’s website at www.palmetto.coop and click Together We Save.

Dutch Company Utilizes Plants To Power Streetlights, Wi-Fi, And Cell Phones

Over the past year, there has been a sudden boom from green technology companies to innovate ways to power cities never before thought of.

The Inquisitr reported on such daring projects in which the latest is about a prototype “wind tree,” a design that can harvest electricity from sloe-speed winds. In an earlier report on green power, a scientist found a way to create glow-in-the-dark plants, a beautiful alternative to bringing light to a city at night.

Now, there are reports of a new green method to provide power for people, which if utilized correctly, can replace present-day energy companies. This was discovered by a Dutch company that found a way to harvest electricity coming from the most unlikely of sources: plants.

According to Yes Magazine and followed-up by Inhabitat, the Dutch company known as Plant-e initially introduced their new energy project, known as “Starry Sky,” at a demonstration in Hembrug, Netherlands. In it, they were able to power 300 LED lights, a truly marvelous show for anyone in attendance. The unique part of this project is that the harvested electricity didn’t come from conventional or even traditional green energy sources — it was harvested from living plants.

Marjolein Helder, the co-founder and CEO of Plant-e, believes that the aforementioned method of harvesting electricity can be revolutionary. Using plants to generate clean energy provides an option on the table that has little to no impact on the environment, and may save consumers up to millions as a whole if implemented correctly into society. Yet, Helder understands to achieve such big dreams, one must take initial steps. For Plant-e, that is done not only through providing light, but by selling Wi-Fi hotspots, mobile chargers, and rooftop electricity modules, all fueled by living plants.

Apparently, the idea for using plants and photosynthesis to extract energy is an old one. Until now, such endeavors have been delegated to middle school projects, mostly in the form of clocks being powered by potatoes. Jim McGowan provided a graphic that gives a general summary of how this is done.

Powering by Plants

Though such an endeavor is novel, at this moment, it isn’t reliable as a commercial product. Ramaraja Ramasamy, an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia College of Engineering, explains that Plant-e utilizes sediment microbial fuel cells, a method that isn’t advanced enough to compete with more established green technology like solar panels and wind turbines. Also, it is fairly new, thus the research is quite limited.

In conclusion, Plant-e’s way of providing power through plants is interesting but not practical to use, especially in the United States and Japan, countries that use a monumental amount of electricity. Presently, Plant-e and other green technology companies like them are researching if it is possible to get around this situation.

Now that you’ve read the news on how a Dutch company is providing electricity through plants, what are your views? Do you think that such a way of providing power will eventually see the light of day in the United States or any other country that consumes a lot of electricity?

New silent wind turbine could generate half of a homes electric needs, says company The ...

Megan Treacy of Treehugger reports Silent rooftop wind turbines could generate half of a household’s energy needs

A Dutch company cased The Archimedes has developed a small, highly efficient, and silent rooftop wind energy generator called the Liam1, which it claims could generate half the power a typical house would need, and which they say would be ideal for combining with solar rooftop PV panels.

The company states that the Liam F1 turbine could generate 1,500 kWh of energy at wind speeds of 5m/s, enough to cover half of an average household’s energy use. … When used in combination with rooftop solar panels, a house could run off grid. “When there is wind you use the energy produced by the wind turbine; when the sun is shining you use the solar cells to produce the energy,” The Archimedes CEO Richard Ruijtenbeek said.

The Liam’s blades are shaped like a Nautilus shell. The design allows it to point into the wind to capture the most amount of energy, while also producing very little sound. The inventor of the turbine Marinus Mieremet says that the power output is 80 percent of the theoretical maximum energy that could be harnessed from the wind.

“Generally speaking, there is a difference in pressure in front and behind of the rotor blades of a windmill. However, this is not the case with the Liam F1. The difference in pressure is created by the spatial figure in the spiral blade. This results in a much better performance. Even when the wind is blowing at an angle of 60 degrees into the rotor, it will start to spin. We do not require expensive software: because of its conical shape, the wind turbine yaws itself automatically into the optimal wind direction. Just like a wind vane. And because the wind turbine encounters minimal resistance, he is virtually silent,” said Mieremet.

The Archimedes is now working on an even smaller turbine that could fit on top of lamposts, boats, and smaller applications.

With the announcement today of the EPA’s proposed new standards for reducing carbon emissions, we have all the more reason to look to renewable energy options to supply our energy needs.

Here is a link to the embedded video below that the company offers to explain the history of the Liam1 turbine. The Archimedes windmill movie ENG high quality

Seda Malaysia denies granting feed-in approval for geothermal resources to any company

PUTRAJAYA: Sustainable Energy Development Authority of Malaysia (SEDA Malaysia) has not granted any feed-in approval for geothermal resources to any company, including Tawau Green Energy Sdn Bhd (TGE).

Chief Executive Officer Datin Badriyah Abdul Malek said although geothermal was included in the Schedule of the Renewable Act 2011 [Act 725] and the subsidiary legislation, which was gazetted on December 26, 2013, there was no tariff listed for geothermal resources as the rate was yet to be determined.

“SEDA Malaysia will include the tariff for geothermal resources in the Schedule of Renewable Energy (RE) Act 2011 once the tariff is approved by the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water,” she said in response to queries by Serdang Member of Parliament Dr Ong Kian Ming who asked whether the 30MW geothermal feed-in-tariff (FIT) quota had been awarded via direct negotiation to TGE.

In a statement, Badriyah said the information published by TGE on Nov 8, 2013 was true and valid due to the fact that geothermal energy qualified as a renewable resource under the feed-in tariff mechanism.

“The resource had been included in the amendment of the Schedule of RE Act 2011 gazetted on Dec 26, 2013.

“SEDA Malaysia has not awarded any feed-in approval to TGE as has been claimed by Ong. TGE, like all applicants for feed-in approval, need to submit their application which currently could not be done as the tariff has not been listed in the schedule.

“TGE would have to submit applications and adhere to all procedures to be eligible and qualify to be become a feed-in approval holder under the RE Act 2011,” she clarified..

Badriyah said SEDA Malaysia was aware TGE was undertaking the effort to develop its geothermal power plant as it was approved by the ministry in 2010 under the Small Renewable Power Programme Project before the feed-in tariff was implemented.

“As clarified earlier, SEDA Malaysia has not granted any FIT approval to TGE. Thus the assumption the minister had over-ride SEDA Malaysia in deciding the quota allocation to the company is absolutely untrue,” she added. – Bernama

“Electricity bills from streetlights are one of the largest expense line items for municipalities today, and cities recognize the benefits of LED retrofit programs to reduce their overall energy consumption,” said Steve Rhoades Petra Systems’ CEO. “We see an even greater opportunity to increase this value and strengthen smart city project economics through an integrated technology platform approach that combines the value of energy savings from LED retrofits and LED light controllers with the revenue generated by solar power production.

Petra Systems is a global technology provider for the renewable energy, energy efficiency and distributed power generation markets. With more than 200,000 installed systems worldwide, Petra Systems delivers reliable, cost effective smart energy solutions that intelligently power communities, cities, solar farms and grids.
