Minnesota Power orders first Siemens wind turbines in output-enhanced 3-MW class


Siemens Energy has been awarded a major order by Minnesota Power for 64 units of the company’s latest 3-MW D3 platform wind turbines to be installed at the Bison Wind Energy Center near New Salem, North Dakota. The innovative wind turbines feature a 113-m rotor and 92.5-m hub height and thus increased rating of 3.2 MW. Turbine installation is scheduled to begin in mid-June 2014, and commercial operation is slated for December 2014. The scope of supply includes transportation, installation and commissioning, as well as a three-year service and maintenance agreement.

Assembly of this specific major component was recently moved from the company’s nacelle facility in Brande, Denmark, to Hutchinson, Kansas, which further demonstrates the company’s commitment to the U.S. wind industry.


“We’re pleased to partner with a world leader like Siemens as wind energy production develops and matures,” said Minnesota Power Chief Operating Officer Brad Oachs. “With the help of Siemens, we’ve integrated new direct drive technology into our Bison project while at the same time staying ahead of Minnesota’s aggressive renewable energy standard.”


By 2025, utilities in Minnesota are required to supply 25% of their power from renewables. Operators of nuclear power plants have to reach 30% renewables even earlier by 2020.


The 205-MW Bison 4 addition will increase Minnesota Power’s Bison Wind Energy Center’s total MW output to nearly 500 MW. Siemens also supplied all of the wind turbines for the previous three phases of the Bison Wind Energy Center, which went into commercial operation in 2010 and 2012.


Wind power and energy service are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. Around 43 percent of its total revenue stems from green products and solutions. That makes Siemens one of the world’s leading providers of eco-friendly technology.

(GIN)—Senegalese-American hip hop artist Akon and a group of solar business partners have announced a plan to address Africa’s grave shortfall in electric power.


Speaking at a press conference in Sierra Leone, Akon said: ‘Music is an inspiration and as an African I am combining that inspiration with energy to reach out and touch the lives of rural people in Africa.” He said he had visited many rural communities in Africa and saw the urgent need to light up their homes and communities while the cost of solar energy is going down.


Nearly 590 million people across sub-Saharan Africa lack access to power and more than 85 percent of those living in rural areas lack access.


Akon estimated his Lighting Africa Project will cost rural people just around one dollar per week compare to the cost of kerosene or candles. Funding for the project, he said, would come from China.


Solar energy has been making major inroads into African homes over the last decade. Among the more successful is the Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) plan. For example, a solar charger from Angaza Design of San Francisco  “talks” with the customer’s mobile phone to authenticate a transaction. M-KOPA, a spin-off of the successful M-Pesa mobile payment network is another plan. Payment plans start at less than 50 cents a day.


Azuri Technologies, another start-up, has partnered with Akon. Their goal is to bring electricity to one million households by the end of 2014.


Azuri counts over 21,000 customers in 10 countries. M-KOPA has 30,000 customers and is looking to attract a large portion of the 15 million active M-PESA users spread throughout the continent. Angaza is on track to reach 10,000 customers in the next nine to 12 months.

Southwest Energy Summit approaches


The sixth annual Southwest Energy Summit has been scheduled for March 26 and March 27 at Sweetwater’s Nolan County Coliseum.

Registration is $300 and exhibits and sponsorships are from $750 to $5,000, with discounts for members of groups including the Cline Shale Alliance and the Texas Wind Energy Clearinghouse.

The expansion of an Isle business has led to 12 new jobs with more vacancies being advertised currently.


Epworth man Roger Priestnall invested in renewable energy solutions three years ago. He has run his Rolec business for 17 years and in the past 12 months has increased his work force from two to 14.


As people seek to reduce their energy bills by installing solar panels, his new venture has taken off, leading to the expansion of his company.


Demand has continued to grow and Mr Priestnall, 38. is now seeking office staff and sales advisors, with future plans for a call centre employing 15 people.


His fiancee Jayne Anderson has joined the business due to the surge in workload, although her background originally is in nursing and health visiting.


She said: “Roger branched out after identifying gaps in the market and a general lack of customer knowledge about the Government’s financial support for homeowners.


“Solar panels are a fantastic investment and with Government pay back schemes they ensure a profit for customers. Roger has been to Germany recently to personally see how solarworld solar panels are made, to ensure his products are of premium quality.”


All staff employed by the company are from the Isle, and include two apprentices from Haxey and Westwoodside, who were taken on this year.


Mr Priestnall’s sister has joined the staff too as one of the installation team.


The take-up of solar panels locally in the Isle mirrors that of the national picture, added Jayne, as over 500,000 home owners are generating their own electricity across the country, and taking advantage of the current subsidy that rewards those who do so.


Mr Priestnall said that strong reductions in the cost of solar panels have helped the growth of his business too, while enabling home owners to reduce their energy bills.


“We have plans for the call centre and have acquired new premises to facilitate expected growth,” said Jayne. Rolec has serviced over 65 homes within the Isle, and has a scheme offering cash rewards for referrals to other customers.

Dam project draws attention to renewable goal

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The state in 2010 adopted an energy policy that set a goal of having 50 percent Alaska’s electric generation come from renewable and alternative energy sources by 2025.


Many believe the likeliest way to achieve that is a major project in south-central Alaska, like the proposed Susitna-Watana hydro project. But the project is far from assured.


Rep. Bill Stoltze last week said he didn’t see a commitment from Gov. Sean Parnell‘s administration for the renewable goal.


Stoltze later said his comments were more of a political challenge, borne of a desire to have more open discussion on projects.


A Parnell spokeswoman says the state remains committed to the renewable energy goal as demonstrated by investments in and ongoing work on the Susitna project and other hydro and wind projects.
