Whole Foods is planning to install up to 100 additional solar rooftop units on its stores nationwide, but to see how renewable energy-centric supermarket looks, head no further than the Gowanus neighborhood in Brooklyn.

The Austin, Texas-based supermarket chain announced a deal yesterday with San Mateo, California-based SolarCity and Princeton, N.J. –based NRG to provide solar panels and equip 100 of the retailer’s 434 U.S. stores with rooftop solar systems. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

For Whole Foods (Nasdaq: WFM), going solar isn’t new. Its Berkeley,California store became the nation’s first major food retailer to introduce solar energy as its primary lighting power source back in 2002, and solar power is also utilized at its Brooklyn store, which opened in 2014 near the Gowanus Canal and was designed to be 60 percent more efficient than any other grocery store in the United States. The latter does not have rooftop solar units, but it has numerous other energy-efficient features.


The supermarket parking lot is covered by solar panel carports designed to offset nearly 30 percent of the 56,000-square-foot building’s electricity use. Both solar and wind energy are used to power two Skypump electric vehicle charging stations and 19 LED streetlights. Urban Green Energy, which installed the latter, had said at the time it opened in December 2013 that the lights would remain operational during regional outages because of their natural power sources.


Plus, since the streetlights and charging stations both produce more energy than they require, they help reduce energy consumption at the supermarket.


In addition, the Gowanus store also has a greenhouse on the roof which measures over 20,000 square feet and grows over 200,000 pounds of fresh leafy greens, herbs and tomatoes each year. It was the first commercial scale greenhouse farm integrated into a supermarket, according to its operator, Greenpoint,Brooklyn-based Gotham Greens.


The solar power plan from Whole Foods (Nasdaq: WFM) comes at a time when the chain is under pressure to reduce costs amid greater competition, and it should save the company money because it can buy electricity at cheaper prices from the solar providers.

ISU assistant professor develops power-saving tools to improve solar-powered robots

An assistant professor at Iowa State University is developing new power-saving methods to improve solar-powered robots, both on land and in the air.


For Ran Dai, an ISU assistant professor and Black and Veatch Faculty Fellow in aerospace engineering, this is her first time working with solar power. But after working as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Washington in Seattle, she worked with Boeing to help make the 787 jet more power-efficient.


“So that work motivates this solar-powered robot,” she said. “My idea, at the beginning, was if we can implement the power-management research in the solar-powered robot, if we have limited solar power energy outside, can we schedule the operation of the robot to work more efficiently?”


After observing a range of other solar-powered products, Dai noticed the majority require a manual recharge every few hours. Even the strongest solar robot currently being used to defuse bombs in the military, Dai said, needs to be recharged every three hours. The key to a longer charge, she said, will require the robot to be smart enough to recharge itself.


“If we want to make the robot to work by itself, they need an automation system. That will make them smart enough to know what’s going on outside, and know how to adjust their operation,” she said. “The idea is if we want them to work permanently or have a long duration, we have to find a way to make them charge automatically.”


A longer battery life can provide more help in several areas, Dai said, including search and rescue missions, agriculture and environmental monitoring, or “anything that requires long-term operation.” As an end goal, Dai said she would like to eventually see a robot capable of working for up to several years.


Students at ISU are also helping to make that goal a reality. Along with students Adam Kaplan, Chuangchuang Sun, Nathaniel Kingry, Kishan Patel and Justin Vandentop, Dai is developing the third generation of a land robot, and the undergraduate program Make to Innovate is busy designing the first generation of an unmanned aerial vehicle capable of self-charging. That vehicle, Dai said, is planned to eventually determine which altitude and angle of flight will give it the most sun exposure and obtain the maximum amount of energy. The goal is to finish the UAV’s design this semester and prepare it for a flight test next year.


Dai’s power-management research is also supported by a five-year, $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development Program to help support the research and teaching of junior faculty.

Students unveil virtual tour of solar-powered house


Like many college freshmen, Tiffany Silverstein signed up for dozens of extracurriculars when she arrived at Vanderbilt University.


One by one, many of them fell off her radar. But one intriguing option held her attention, mainly because of the enthusiasm of the other students involved and the massive challenge it presented.


Together, Team Tennessee, which includes students from Vanderbilt University and Middle Tennessee State University, is working to design and build a family home that is entirely powered by solar energy. They unveiled their design on Tuesday, along with a virtual video tour of the “green” house, which includes a roof lined with solar panels.


The next step is to construct the two-bedroom, one-bathroom home and then break it down, ship it to California and rebuild it for the 2015 Solar Decathlon competition in October sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Judges at the competition will select a winner based on design, energy production and affordability.


While designing the home, which is dubbed Harmony House, the group tried to create a home that would would be comfortable for a modern family. They included a covered front porch that allows room to entertain and a garden wall in the back to provide shade.




Silverstein, who is now a sophomore majoring in computer engineering and math, said that working on the project for more than a year has opened her eyes to the viability of solar power on a large scale.


“The big catch for a while has been cost,” she said. “That really is changing a lot, and the world of solar power has changed so much in the last five, 10 years even.


“As more people use them, as more companies produce these things, as more people realize this is something they can do, things will get less expensive.”


The students hope to build Harmony House for less than $200,000. After the competition, they’ll donate the finished product to Habitat for Humanity, which has partnered with Team Tennessee.


“Being environmentally friendly is no longer sort of a fringe concept,” Silverstein said. “On an institutional level, Vanderbilt, MTSU and Habitat for Humanity all really care about green technology.”
