Solar Sidewinder - Insertable Heat Exchanger for an Electric Water Heater

ABOUT THE PRODUCT: The Solar Sidewinder Heating Element (Patent Pending) is a screw-in heat exchanger for electric water heaters. It is a component part of a closed-loop solar water heating system. It is designed to create a hybrid solar-electric hot water tank (or an auxiliary solar hot water tank) out of an existing electric water heater. This product does not work with gas fired water heaters.

TECHNICAL SPECS: Single wall dielectric design optimized for steel tanks; Max Heat Transfer Fluid Operating Temperature: 200 F @ 20 PSI or 180 F @ 100PSI; Must be used with non-toxic heat transfer fluid such as water mixed with propylene glycol. Fits all 1″ female NPT/FPT heating element receptacles; Can be used with a flange adapter to fit flange type heating element receptacles; Standard I/O Plumbing Fittings: Input ½” Male NPT/MPT, Output ½” Female NPT/FPT; Built to last with lead free metals and heat resistant CPVC; Requires Teflon thread tape for a water tight installation and seal (Not Included). Each Sidewinder can be used with a solar water array up to 13 square feet of insulated solar surface area in climates with high solar insolation. Solar surface area is limited by the probability of overheating the CPVC to near or above 200 F.

HEATING CAPACITY: The US Dept. of Energy (DOE) suggests sizing a solar water heater to 1.5 gallons of water for every square foot of flat plate solar collector. Each Sidewinder is recommended to heat up to 20 gallons of water when using the recommended maximum of 13 sq ft of insulated flat plate solar collectors. This product will not achieve desired results when used with non-insulated polymer based solar arrays/collectors (such as solar pool/spa heaters) due to the collector’s inability to reach or maintain temperatures above 130F. In addition, large energy losses may occur when heated fluid lines are not well insulated. For tested and proven results, use with Heliatos products.
