Tips for saving on home heating


Although temperatures may be in the mid 80’s right now, each passing day is a reminder that summer is coming to an end and winter will soon be upon us.


That means it’s not too soon to start thinking about how best to hold down the cost of staying warm this winter.


Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures have conditioned Wisconsinites to weatherproof their homes. However, tips from professionals act as good reminders of what we can do to ensure we get the most from our heating system without breaking the bank.


Change air filter


Changing your heating system’s air filter is one simple way to keep your appliance running at the highest possible efficiency.


“If you do not exchange your filters, then they get clogged up and they have to work that much harder to heat your home,” Wisconsin Public Service spokesman Kerry Spees said. “It’s a very small thing, a small change, but it really helps during those winter months.”


According to the Wisconsin Public Service website, air filters cost between $6 and $35 depending on the model. Regularly changing filters can save up to 15 percent on your monthly heating bill.


On the other hand, Consumer Reports estimates it can cost up to $300 to have a professional fix damage caused by a clogged filter.


Clean filters also improve the quality of the air you breathe, said Doug Meek, energy auditor for Highland Building Consultants in Green Bay.


“Especially with furnaces that run a fan all the time, replacing the filter improves the indoor air quality,” Meek said.


Preseason tune-ups


Although a system tune-up is an additional expense, Spees said they are necessary to prevent more severe, expensive problems in the future when you may need heat the most.


“It’s a little bit of an investment,” Speed said. “People should call some contractors because costs can range, depending. But as far as price goes, if you do wait and they end up finding anything it becomes a matter of pay me now or pay me later.”


If you do not wish to have an annual tune-up, Meek said newer systems can get by with a check-up every other year while systems ten years and older should have a yearly checkup.


Seal and insulate ducts


Insulation is one of the oldest and most recognized methods to maintain uniform indoor temperatures year-round.


Newer homes tend to be well insulated, but if you own an older home chances are you could benefit by buying additional insulation to keep the house warm and avoid heat loss.


APEX Heating & Cooling Sales Representative Dan Delforge recommends looking into a program called Focus on Energy for assistance with the cost of upgrading insulation.


Focus on Energy is a statewide energy efficiency and renewable resource program that works with Wisconsin utilities.


The organization’s website offers information on a variety of home improvement and energy savings topics and manages the a rebate program that pays up to $1000 for qualified energy-efficient heating and cooling equipment and attic insulation.


Programmable thermostats


There are mixed reviews on whether programmable thermostats are effective.


A programmable thermostat is designed to switch temperatures at specified times during the day. The devices cost between $20 and $40, plus additional fees for installation and programming.


Spees swears by this customizable technology and considers it to be the best investment for people concerned about saving money on utilities.


“I have mine set to 68 degrees and when my wife and I go to work it’ll go down to 60,” Spees said. “Then it’ll go back up to 68 degrees at night when we get home.”


Spees said every degree you keep your thermostat down saves about 3 percent on your bill.


However, others are not quite sold.


Meek said he prefers keeping his home at one constant temperature.


“It’s a personal opinion,” Meek said. “They are alright if they only swing in four to 10 degree frames.”


Going over that 10 degree difference means the furnace will use a great deal of energy to bring the temperature in the house back up, which can mean higher heating costs in the long run.


Install energy-efficient windows


Delforge said old, loose windows are often to blame for a chilly home and increased heating costs.


“Windows like that are going to allow the cold to penetrate faster,” Delforge said. “Slowing that down with new windows will help reduce your heating bill.”


Consumer Reports notes window replacement is a long-term investment that is repaid over time.Window replacement can typically reduce a heating bill between 7 and15 percent.


Even if your windows are up to date, monitoring the use of shades and blinds also plays a big role Spees said.


“Although it may be nice to watch a snowfall from your window that happens to be one of the biggest culprits in heat loss,” Spees said. “Draw the shades on a could cloudy day and open them up when it’s a sunny day.”

Solar power heating up in Idaho

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho is going green whether it wants to or not.


The Idaho Public Utilities Commission in the last several months has approved agreements with 13 solar power projects.


A combination of federal regulations, tax incentives, cheaper solar panels and a rate-calculating method developed by the commission itself has made solar power economically attractive.


But commissioners and Idaho Power Co. officials say the projects could end up costing ratepayers more because utilities will face uncertainties by being forced by federal rules to integrate power from a source that fluctuates with the sun.


“There’s a point where we can’t continue to take intermittent power without harming our customers,” said Idaho Power spokesman Brad Bowlin.


The 13 projects spread across southern Idaho add up to about 400 megawatts. That’s enough to power up to 400,000 homes.


The Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act, or PURPA, created in 1978 is intended to promote alternative resources. It requires power companies to buy electricity at a state commission-approved rate from qualifying small power production facilities.


The Idaho commission in a 69-page decision in December 2012 set those rates based on a methodology that paid more during peak demand times and when other power producing sources, mainly hydro, lagged.


That shifted the renewable energy field in Idaho away from wind power toward solar power. That’s because, experts say, Idaho is windy in the spring and fall. In the spring, hydro projects produce plenty of energy for the region, and in the fall energy demands are reduced.


Solar power hits its peak in the summer, a time when Idaho residents turn on air conditioners.


“It wasn’t too long after that (2012) case that solar power companies began enquiring,” said commission spokesman Gene Fadness. “It gave some developers some certainty as to how much they would be paid.”


Another factor is a tax break for solar power worth up to 30 percent of the cost of a project. That tax break is set to expire at the end of 2016, and companies must have at least part of their projects up and running before the deadline if they want the tax credit.


“Creating a profit incentive to produce clean energy is not a bad thing,” said Joe Miller, an attorney and former Idaho Public Utilities Commission member from 1987 to 1995 who now represents Ketchum-based Intermountain Energy Partners.


The company has seven of the solar projects. Miller said that the price Idaho Power will pay for solar power is based on the 2012 decision and is equal to the price the utility would pay if it produced the power itself.


Idaho Power under federal regulations has to buy that solar power. Currently, the company produces about 1,700 megawatts from hydro projects, 1,100 megawatts from coal plants, and 750 megawatts from natural gas. It has a smattering of smaller power sources as well, including biomass projects and geothermal.


Wind power generates about 675 megawatts, with about 580 of that from PURPA projects.


The company said the problem with wind and solar power is its intermittent nature and how the new projects disrupt the company’s 20-year planning process.


Phil DeVol, the company’s resource planning leader, said the company doesn’t need to add more power producing sources until 2021, yet it will have to accommodate a burst of solar power if the projects are built.


“That’s a real challenge predicting what that market value is 10 years down the road,” DeVol said. “That’s one of the concerns that we have.”


The falling price of solar panels is another driving factor in the solar project increase, experts said. The solar panels are about the size of a desk top, and one of the projects calls for 380,000 of them about 20 miles southwest of Mountain Home. The enormous size of the projects even causes concern for conservation groups who prefer solar to coal.


“That’s a lot of land that’s going to be covered in solar panels,” said Ben Otto of the Idaho Conservation League. But he said the planned projects so far are on private land in areas without significant wildlife value.


“We have to balance this desire for clean energy with protecting the wildlife habitat that we care about,” he said. “These solar projects strike the right balance.”


Southern Idaho is considered a resource rich area for solar developers, so much so there’s concern that solar power could ultimately produce more energy than Idaho can use or Idaho Power can absorb. That’s why the Idaho Conservation League is backing two proposed transmission lines in southern Idaho to export power to surrounding states.


“From our perspective — we’re an environmental group — we need to find a way to produce power that reduces pollution,” Otto said.

Cutting Down On Home Heating Costs

GREENVILLE, S.C. - This latest cold spell is spurring many homeowners to get their heat checked.


“Our service department has been hammered with phone calls,” said Ross King of Dipple Heating And Air.


We caught up with him at a house in Greenville where a service tech was inspecting the furnace.


King recommends every homeowner get their system inspected twice a year: Once before summer and again now before winter.


And don’t forget about those air filters. King says you should change them out once a month because a dirty one makes your system work harder.


“They need as much air coming into them as they do going out. When you have a clogged filter or a thick filter, it restricts the air flow coming into the system. So thin filters, very inexpensive filters and change them regularly is the best way to keep them going,” said King.


And if you still have an old thermostat with the lever, ditch it for a digital one, preferably one you can program. According to the Energy Department, you can save 10% a year on heating costs by using a programmable thermostat.


“If you’re going to work for the day or just out to the store, you can change your thermostat a few degrees. The system actually works a lot harder to try to bring your home up to temperature if you come down ten degrees. The only time I would ever bring your thermostat down by ten plus degrees is if you’re gone for an extended period of time,” said King.


Another way to save this winter is through your water heater. According to the Energy Department, it accounts for up to 25% of energy used in the home. It recommends turning down the water heater temperature to the “warm” setting.
