A solar panel farm could be sprouting in Griffiss Business and Technology Park.

The Griffiss Local Development Corp. Board of Directors approved an option with a Vermont-based installer of solar energy systems for a project Thursday. The firm, groSolar, is looking at about 20 acres of undeveloped land off of Perimeter Road between the Griffiss Institute building and Family Dollar warehouse.

The company also has a project in the works with the city. It intends to install nearly 10,000 solar panels in rows on about four acres at the former Tannery Road landfill.

If the company pursues a lease at Griffiss following completion of a feasibility study and other reviews like environmental and electrical grid interconnect, it will pay GLDC up to $40,000 in the first year. There would be an annual 2 percent escalator for the remainder of the 25-year lease. There’s also a five-year renewal option.

During the directors’ discussion of the option, GLDC attorney Jef Saunders recommended language covering removal of the solar panels by the company at the end of the lease and requiring a fence around the panels.

The fee for the option is $500.

GLDC staff said the electricity generated by the panels would be sold to by groSolar to customers.

The firm’s website says it has completed more than 2,000 installations nationwide, including applications atop brown fields and landfills, commercial, educational, municipal facilities, and manufacturing plants.

Texas Hits New Peak Wind Output

Graph of Texas (ERCOT) hourly wind generation, as explained in the article text

At 8:48 p.m. on March 26, wind generation on the electric grid covering most of the state of Texas reached a new instantaneous peak output of 10,296 megawatts (MW). At that moment, wind supplied almost 29% of total electricity load, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the grid’s operator. The average wind production in that hour was 10,120 MW. The new wind record surpassed two highs reached in the previous week, while the record prior to March was 9,674 MW set in May 2013.

March’s wind power record will likely be surpassed in the near future as wind capacity continues to be added in the state. Texas currently has more than 12,000 MW of operational utility-scale wind capacity (see graph below)—about one-fifth of the total wind capacity in the United States. According to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Electric Power Monthly, Texas added 150 MW of utility-scale wind capacity in 2013, less than one-tenth of the nearly 1,600 MW added in the previous year.

Graph of total utility-scale wind capacity in Texas, as explained in the article text

The significant slowdown in wind additions in 2013 mirrored the national trend, which reflected the lapse of the federal production tax credit (PTC) at the end of 2012. That lapse encouraged those with facilities under construction to complete them and begin operation before the end of 2012 in order to receive the tax credits (which are for all generation during the first 10 years of operation). The subsequent one-year extension in early 2013 required only that plants commence construction in 2013 to be eligible to receive the tax credits after the start of operations at a later date. This modification of eligibility requirements led to many wind projects beginning construction in 2013 with expected completion dates in 2014-15. Trade association reports estimate that there were more than 7,000 MW of wind projects under construction in Texas at the end of 2013; however, exactly how much of that capacity will actually be completed and by when remains to be seen.

The recent wind output records are a result not only of the growing amount of wind capacity in the state, but also of the successful completion of a major state-directed transmission expansion program, the Competitive Renewable Energy Zones (CREZ) program, which was specifically designed to allow wind power to reach a wider swath of the ERCOT grid and reduce grid congestion-related curtailments of wind power. Tomorrow’s article will discuss wind curtailments and the CREZ program in more detail.

A Former Coal Miner Promotes Green Energy, Synchonizing Fireflies, Memories of Frog Hunting ...

One Virginia man spreads the gospel of green.

There are fireflies in Pennsylvania that blink together.

More women are taking on the role of farmer.

A Tennessee writer has fond memories of hunting frogs.

Focusing on Education. Educators from all over the country are currently in Denver Colorado at the 152nd annual meeting of the National Education Association. West Virginia’s Education Association President Dale Lee is there for discussions on issues like the Common Core  Standards, and standardized testing. West Virginia Public Radio’s Glynis Board spoke with Lee before he left and has this report.

Future Conservation Leaders Meet. 110 high school students from around the world just took part in a week-long event in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, that encourages them to develop conservation leadership skills. The Student Climate and Conservation Conference, which is called SC 3 for short, asks the question: How are we as global citizens going to bring back and contribute to our schools and communities? West Virginia Public Radio’s Cecelia Mason has more.

Mining for Green Energy Workers. One former coal miner in Virginia is already taking action on conservation issues. Summer was, historically, a time for itinerant preachers to travel the country, saving souls at tent revivals. Today, a not-for-profit called Appalachian Voices is following that tradition, putting a fourth generation coal miner on the road to preach the gospel of green energy.  WVTF’s  Sandy Hausman has this look at Nick Mullins’ crusade.

Ms. Old McDonald had a farm. Women have helped on farms for generations, but now they’re beginning to take ownership of their duties, calling themselves farmers instead of just farmers’ wives. The USDA has found a steady increase of women farmers in the 2000s, which plateaued in the agency’s latest 5-year report. Whitney Jones of WKMS visits a Trigg County, Kentucky, farm where one daughter is showing that farm work isn’t just for men.

Synchronizing Lightening Bugs in Pennsylvania. The other night at dusk I sat on my patio eating ice cream watching the fireflies float up from the grass, a twinkling ornamentation to a perfect summer evening. The fireflies in my yard blink randomly, but there’s a place in Pennsylvania where the flash of the lightening bugs presents a well-orchestrated display. They blink in sync. Two summers ago the Allegheny Front’s Ann Murray went to the Allegheny National Forest to check it out.

It Must Be Frog Season! Frog Hunting is one of the topics covered in Fred Sauceman’s latest book about Appalachian food, Buttermilk and Bible Burgers. One chapter in the book features the story of a favorite warm weather pastime for Sauceman, hunting for frogs, something he did with his father each year.

New Appalachian Music Traditions. Teenagers Nevada and Riley Tribble and Walter King have been going to shows at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins for years. One of their mentors, Gerry Milnes, says the three are among the youngest musicians to ever take classes at Augusta. And although they mostly play traditional old time tunes, the Alleycats also cover a few contemporary songs. Traveling 219′s Roxy Todd sat down with the three musicians to talk about the band

Plans submitted for Scotland's first commercial solar energy park in Angus

The 19.54 hectare solar energy park would generate enough electricity to power 2,500 homes

An Aberdeen-based renewable energy firm has submitted a planning application to create Scotland’s first solar energy park in Angus.

BWE Partnership is proposing a 19.54 hectare solar energy park at New Mains of Guynd Farm in Arbroath.

Under the plans, part of New Mains of Guynd Farm in Angus would be transformed into a solar energy park for a period of 25 years, after which the components would be removed.

The solar park proposal would operate with a capacity of 9.5 megawatts, which the developers say would provide enough electricity to power 2,500 homes.

Ron Shanks, managing partner of BWE Partnership, said: “We are pleased to have reached the planning application stage in the development process and hopefully our proposal will be viewed favourably by Angus Council and the local community.

“We continue to be on the look-out for further solar park opportunities, especially in Angus and Fife, as we believe there is a real opportunity for Scotland to harvest energy from the daylight.”

JLL provided planning and development advice on behalf of BWE Partnership.

Steven Black, Director of Planning and Development for JLL, said: “Whilst the idea of farming sunshine in Scotland may seem odd to some people, the lower intensity of sunlight is compensated for by longer hours of daylight, making solar power a viable resource of renewable energy north of the border.

“As one of the first developers to submit plans for such a site in Scotland, the park will provide a model for solar energy in rural areas.

“Not only will it help contribute to the UK and Scottish Government’s renewable energy targets, but it will bring significant investment into the local area, providing employment opportunities and supporting rural diversification.”

State appeals court upholds Cohasset wind turbine approval

  • COHASSET – Plans for a controversial wind turbine on Turkey Hill could soon move forward after the state appeals court upheld a land court ruling that the town’s planning board acted appropriately when it approved the project.

The state appeals court on Wednesday upheld a Boston Land Court judge’s ruling against neighbors and a nearby skilled-nursing home who challenged the project’s legality.

The neighbors sued in March 2011 alleging that the planning board failed to acknowledge their concerns and violated the town’s bylaws when it granted special permits to the Trustees of Reservations, a statewide conservation group that oversees much of Turkey Hill and would operate the turbine.

According to the lawsuit, the 410-foot-tall Turkey Hill turbine would be erected in the northwest corner of Cohasset, in the 314-acre Whitney Thayer Woods, and would be within 1,000 feet of the Golden Living skilled-nursing home and homes on the Hingham side of the border.

Jim Younger, the director of structural resources and technology at the Trustees of Reservations said in a statement Wednesday that the group is “very pleased” with the court’s ruling and grateful for the widespread support for the project.

“At this time, we are still very interested in moving forward with the project and will be reassessing our options following the lengthy delays to the project. We will keep the community informed as we complete this review,” he said.

Damon Seligson, an attorney for Golden Living, could not be reached for comment.

While the lawsuit addressed a host of concerns – including the risk of collapse, and noise related to construction – it focused on the “flickering shadows” that the 150-foot blades would cast on nearby properties.

A land court judge in 2012 upheld the board’s approval, determining that the permit’s special conditions adequately address safety concerns and follow zoning bylaws.

For example, the permit requires that the organization monitor flickering and make sure that it doesn’t exceed 30 minutes per day or 300 hours per year.

Golden Living claimed that the trustees failed to prove the turbine wouldn’t result in excessive flicker, but the appeals court agreed that the conditions of the permit are sufficient.

“The generally accepted industry practice limits shadow flicker to no more than thirty hours per year,” the ruling states, noting that there are no state or federal regulations for shadow flicker.

The turbine was the first project approved under Cohasset’s wind-energy conversion facility bylaw, which town meeting approved in 2008. The planning board rejected an earlier proposal for two turbines in Cohasset Heights off Route 3A.

Golden Living in the appeal also said the land court judge “abused his discretion” by excluding their expert witnesses, which were identified three months after discovery closed.

Page 2 of 2 – The appeals court determined the judge “was entitled to determine that allowing the experts to testify after Golden Living’s late disclosure would have prejudiced the defendants or caused delay of the trial.”

Wind turbine near hydro and water lines raises concerns

DUNNVILLE Residents opposed to a Haldimand County wind project say they’re concerned about at least one turbine being built too close to hydro and water lines.

However, the Grand Renewable Energy Park developer Samsung says it’s following all laws and regulations.

“The REA (Renewable Energy Approval) does not require specific setbacks from water mains,” Samsung spokesperson Tim Smitheman said. “Each turbine has received a building permit from the Haldimand municipality.”

Ministry of the Environment spokesperson Lindsay Davidson said the Green Energy Act only contains setback requirements for noise, natural heritage and water bodies.

Brad Smith, who lives just outside Dunnville and has a turbine under construction just 900 metres from his property, said he believes there should be setback requirements for hydro and water lines.

“The Green Energy Act just supersedes anything,” he said.

Smith, who is part of the group Wind Concerns Haldimand, said the project has decreased his property value and the trucks for the construction have destroyed roads.

Haldimand County has agreements with wind turbine companies operating in the area to fix the roads.

The specific turbine in question is number 67 in the project and sits on a Haldimand Tract farm, near the intersection with Haldimand Trail.

Smitherman said the project “has followed every municipal and provincial guideline in its planning and construction phases while creating over 300 construction jobs in the local community.”

Lights Smartphones Cameras GPS E-Readers USB Cell Batteries

    Simple, fast charging
The 1Amp output of the BOLT charges target devices at the same rate as a typical wall charger. On average, a smartphone goes from zero to full in just under three hours.
    Sundial for energy capture
The innovative design of the BOLT allows a simple pencil (included) to be inserted into the center, which makes the BOLT act like a sundial. Simply point the BOLT towards the sun and rotate it until the pencil no longer casts a shadow. A full day in direct sunlight completely charges the BOLT’s on-board 2000mAh Li-Poly battery.
    One-button operation
The BOLT has a single LED push button. When it’s capturing energy from the sun or USB, the button lights up red. Push the button one time and the BOLT flashes one to five times to indicate battery level, then begins energy output. Push the button one more time to turn the power off.
    Charging efficiency
While electronics are changing all the time, there are two standard charging specs that devices adhere to — a CTIA standard charge output, which most devices follow, and an Apple charge output which Apple products follow. The BOLT is designed to switch modes, allowing for the most efficient charging of all devices, regardless of which charging mode they require. When the BOLT’s LED button is green, this indicates it is in CTIA charging output mode. To switch modes, simply hold down the button for five seconds and release. The button will then light up blue, indicating it is now in a mode optimized for Apple products like the iPad, iPhone, and iPod.
    Heat and chemistry
A high temperature-rated Li-Poly battery is unlike other battery chemistries, working in high-heat with a 60C specification which means the heat of the sun never interrupts efficient solar charging. When the useful life of the rechargeable battery is over, the BOLT’s battery is easily user-replaceable.
Charge when the sun goes down
The BOLT’s battery can be re-charged via the micro-USB port using the included USB charging cable. From USB, the BOLT’s battery charges to full capacity in 4.5 hours.
    Compact for travel
When the BOLT is not spun open to capture energy from the sun, it folds closed into a compact package that fits in the palm of your hand. At only 5.3 ounces, it stows easily, providing battery back-up for USB powered electronics while on-the-go.

LETTER: wind turbine is such an eyesore

I know many would disagree with me, but why not write in a say so

But I think the wind turnbine that you can see from Eastwood and Kimberley is an eyesore.

There is not doubting they are clean energy producers and are the future for now, but they are not pretty no matter what anyone says in my book.

Our scientists will surely come up with something that does the same thing interms of producing energy but is not a patch on the size and impact this thing has on the landscape. I just wondered what other readers of the Advertiser think.

Biofuels as Alternative Sources of Energy

Biofuels are produced by transforming organic matter into fuel for powering our culture. These biofuels are a different energy source to the fossil fuels that we currently hinge on. The biofuels umbrella includes under its aegis ethanol and by-products of plants such as sugar walking stick, along with veggie and corn oils. Nevertheless, not all ethanol items are developed to be made use of as a sort of gas. The International Energy Company (IEA) tells us that ethanol might comprise around 10 percent of the globe’s functional fuel by 2025, and around 30 percent by 2050. Today, the percentage number is two percent.

Nonetheless, we have a long way to head to refine and make economic and practical these biofuels that we are exploring. A study by Oregon State College proves this. We have yet to create biofuels that are as power effective as gasoline made from petroleum. Electricity efficiency is the measure of just how much usable electricity for our required functions is derived from a particular amount of input electricity. (Absolutely nothing that mankind has ever before used has obtained even more energy from outcome than from exactly what the needed input was. Exactly what has consistently been important is the sale– the end-product electricity is what serves for our necessities, while the input power is merely the initiative it takes to create the end-product.) The OSU research study found corn-derived ethanol to be only 20 % power reliable (gasoline made from oil is 75 % power effective). Biodiesel gas was videotaped at 69 % energy efficiency. Nevertheless, the research did appear one good: cellulose-derived ethanol was charted at 85 % efficiency, which is even more than that of the remarkably effective nuclear energy.

Just recently, oil futures have been down on the New York Stock Exchange, as analysts from many different nations are predicting a rise in biofuel accessibility which would counter the value of oil, dropping crude oil rates on the global market to $40 each barrel or thereabouts. The Chicago Stock market has a grain futures market which is beginning to “swipe” financial investment activity away from the oil futures in NY, as financiers are most definitely expecting much better success to begin coming from biofuels. Definitely, it is predicted by a consensus of analysts that biofuels shall be providing 7 percent of the entire globe’s transportation gases by the year 2030. One specific power markets analyst has actually stated, development popular for diesel and gasoline may slow down dramatically, if the government subsidizes companies dispersing biofuels and further pushes to advertise using environment-friendly energy.

There are numerous countries which are seriously involved in the advancement of biofuels.

There is Brazil, which takes place to be the globe’s most significant producer of ethanols derived from sweets. It produces about three and a half billion gallons of ethanol annually.

The Usa, while being the globe’s best oil-guzzler, is currently the second largest manufacturer of biofuels behind Brazil.

The European Union’s biodiesel manufacturing ability is now over of 4 million (British) tonnes. 80 percent of the EU’s biodiesel gases are derived from rapeseed oil; soy bean oil and a limited volume of palm oil make up the various other 20 percent.

GENERcoin: Green renewable Energy Backed by Cryptocurrency

The world’s climatologists have determined that we have gone past the point of no return as far as reversing the damage done from burning fossil fuels.

But they have also said that if current levels are not drastically reduced the problem will continue to worsen, eventually reaching exponential progression by 2035. The devastation to the world economy that this would cause is almost inconceivable.

    A better alternative

But the Canadian firm Arterran Renewable Fuels based out of British Columbia is attempting to tackle the problem of fossil fuel burning. Arterran has created a truly renewable fuel that does not use food products such as corn.

The use of plant-based fuels when we are already having difficulties with droughts and food shortages are exacerbating the problem and is simply wasteful and shortsighted. Instead the company opted to use things like manure, municipal solid waste and wood waste to create a solid biofuel labeled “solid density fuel pellets” that appear to be some next generation stuff.

Arterran believes that their fuel will spell the end of our need for coal, which according to the US Environmental Protection Agency, contributes to 40% of green house gases on Earth. The company cites five reasons for this:

    1. The product is made of cellulose, which has an organic formula of C6H10O5 and is the most abundant organic polymer on earth. The company claims that just the manure in Canada alone would provide enough fuel to power more than sixty million homes for one year.

    2. There are no fossil fuel generated carbons to poison the air with its emissions, nor are there metals, tar or creosol. Essentially, emissions are steam.

    3. Each ton of coal requires between 800 and 3,000 gallons of water to extract and process into a useable form. Arterran fuel only used water in conjunction with a food grade catalyst and 95% of the water used is used multiple times, with a 5% loss to steam with each cycle.

    4. The electrical generation industry currently uses wood pellets when they generate electricity. The problem is that the wood pellets readily absorb moisture and produce CO2 and methane, both of which are explosive if not handled properly. Wood pellets also generate about 8,500 BTU per pound while Arterran maxes out at more than 12,000 BTU. Finally, Arterran is biologically inert and requires no special handling, which reduces shipping costs while increasing safety for workers.

    5. Finally, Arterran is made from 100% waste material which means that we can turn our farms into food production facilities instead of 21st century energy fields.

    GENERcoin

As a way to promote the new fuel Arterran has introduced a new cryptocurrency and exchange that allows them to “pre-sell” the new biofuel. Investors can buy GENERcoins at the exchange and either trade for other cryptocurrencies or use them to buy the new fuel at a 51% discount to current market prices.

The GENERcoins crowdsale took place on the Master Protocol on June 11, 2014. No information has yet been released to the amount raised. But it should also be noted that each participant had the chance to purchased Arterran’s NextGEN Solid Biofuel at the rate of $0.062 USD per coin, equivalent to 10,000 BTU, which includes the discount rate. Each coin holder now has the option of redeeming their coins for the fuel or exchanging or trading them as they see fit.

'Protect solar energy' petition delivered to Gov. Jan Brewer's office today

    Reporter- Phoenix Business Journal

Tucson solar advocate Lesley Lillywhite delivered more than 3,100 “Protect solar energy” petition signatures to Gov. Jan Brewer’s office today.

The petition, which she started on MoveOn.org earlier this month, urges the governor to stop a solar property tax the Arizona Department of Revenue will assess next year on leased and financed systems.

“I do not think there should be a tax on solar,” said Lillywhite, a fourth-generation Arizonan and former rooftop solar user who is considering solar at her new home. “It’s funny to even consider taxing the sun. This will turn people against solar.”

Lillywhite, an astrologer, astronomer and screenwriter assistant, wants to show Arizonans are concerned about the environment, support solar and green energy options and are against the Koch brothers “meddling” with state issues.

The Koch family owns Koch Industries, the second largest privately owned company in the U.S. The billionaire brothers typically lobby against climate change legislation, and Lillywhite said their “agenda is to quash solar development.”

“In a state like Arizona, we should be promoting solar,” Lillywhite said. “I’d like to call attention to Gov. Brewer to promote solar. I mistrust that she really opts to promote that.”

Hundreds rallied against the tax at the State Capitol earlier this month, including solar installers and members of TUSK, Tell Utilities Solar Won’t Be Killed.

Based on DOR research and an interpretation of the state law last year, the department issued a memo describing how certain renewable energy systems needed to be valued for property tax purposes under Arizona’s personal property tax. Some taxpayers were reporting value on their solar systems, while others were not, said Sean Laux, an Arizona Department of Revenue spokesman.

How To Make Your Car Faster And More Economical

faster1 at How To Make Your Car Faster And More Economical

Unless you have your car professionally re-mapped, making a car faster and expecting improved economy may sound a little farfetched. We’re not talking big figures here, but with a few easy DIY jobs and a little TLC, you can improve your engine’s performance whilst gaining a little economy – after all, the smoother an engine runs, the less effort is needed to propel the car.

faster2 at How To Make Your Car Faster And More Economical

    Full Service

A full engine service should be the first item on your list. This should include an oil and filter change, new spark plugs, HT leads, fuel filters and air filter (we’ll talk about air filters next).

If you are not confident in tackling this yourself, find a specialist like Big John’s Auto Centre, a company who’ll also have a decent website where you can get an idea of anything else you may think needs attention.

When an engine is running smoothly and efficiently, you can expect to gain a few HP.

faster3 at How To Make Your Car Faster And More Economical

    Breathe Easy

A cheap and easy modification to help your engine breathe better involves the air-filter. The easiest option is replacing the stock panel filter with a sports filter – these are virtually identical in that they simply pop back in where the old one comes out. Instead of paper, oil coated wire mesh is used. They can be easily cleaned and re-sprayed with oil for re-use.

The second option is a little more hands on but is easy enough to install following instructions. Once the air box is removed, a CAI (Cold Air Intake) pipe is fixed in its place with a cone filter at the other end. The cone filter should be placed as far away from the engine as possible, perhaps near the front of the car. Since the internal combustion engine produces large amounts of heat, simply moving the air intake and air filter away from this heat improves performance by putting more fuel-air mixture into the cylinders – some kits come with a heat shield, a sheet of metal positioned over the filter to prevent any hot air entering the engine.

faster4 at How To Make Your Car Faster And More Economical

Forced-air (RAM) induction is a third option but you may find it harder to install without some more serious cosmetic modifications to your car. Some people confuse CAI and forced induction, as they are similar in what they achieve. Where an engine naturally sucks in air at atmospheric level, with forced induction the engine is force-fed larger volumes as the car approaches and exceeds 40-mph and the air flows through the filter. It uses the same components as CAI, only the cone is positioned in a place where air will pass through it from the motion of the car accelerating. This is where you may face difficulty placing it without cosmetically modifying your car. Some racecars replace a headlight with an air intake to maximize the amount of air flowing into it.

Combined with a full engine service, and depending on your car and engine, a good CAI should increase your power by around 10-14-HP.

faster5 at How To Make Your Car Faster And More Economical

    REDEX

This is the easiest and cheapest item on the list, yet it gives the most impressive results. Simply adding half a bottle of REDEX (engine cleaning fluid to every full tank of petrol – around 2ml per L) cleans away any residue from the fuel tank clogging the fuel lines and injectors. Again, depending on the age of your engine and how well it has been maintained, once a whole bottle of REDEX has made its way through your car’s system, expect to gain around 10-HP.

So for the price of a full engine service, a few air intake components and a bottle of REDEX engine cleaning fluid, your car should gain at least 15+HP and run more efficiently and economically.

One quick tip for a cooler house this summer

    fhac_reuse_ac_filter_three

Sponsored By Flanders Heating & Air Conditioning.

Flanders Heating & Air Conditioning is a customer focused heating and air-conditioning company that was originally started in 1954. Located in Flanders NY, we employ highly trained people whose goal is to make our company the best service company in the East End.

One Quick and Easy DIY Tip to Keep Your Home Cool and Comfortable this Summer!

Here’s the thing: the harder any piece of mechanical equipment has to work, the more energy it uses, and the quicker it needs service or repair. Look at it this way — if you change the oil in your car regularly, and keep the tires inflated, your car lasts longer and you get much better gas mileage, right?

Well, the same thinking holds true for your home’s central air conditioning system — do a little regular maintenance and not only will you pay a whole lot less to PSE&G, but the system itself will last years longer.

While it’s best to have a certified HVAC service professional perform an annual maintenance on your system in order to repair sealed areas, clean coils and fins, and adjust both the blower and refrigerant as needed, the one thing that you can do is replace your systems air filter on a regular basis.

Think of your AC system as something that breathes: the air filter is like a fine mask that traps dust and particulates so they don’t circulate through your home. But as they accumulate, the system needs to work much harder to ‘inhale’ — which means that you’ll use more energy and increase wear on the overall system. Plus, over time, clogged filter often give way, allowing dust and allergens to circulate throughout your house.

Luckily, the fix is an easy one — Just Change your Filter. And here’s how to do it:

    1) Turn Off The Power:

IMPORTANT: Be sure to TURN OFF your Indoor Air Conditioning Unit before servicing the unit. Simply locate the safety switch, which looks like a light switch, on the blower, air handler or furnace, and switch it off. In some cases, the switch may be at the top of the basement stairs or on the wall next to the indoor unit.

    2) Locate Your Filter:

Air Filters are always located in the airflow stream of your system, typically, in one of two places, the main living area, or the basement. In the main living area, air filter access will be on the return air-duct register: look for a large rectangular grate, usually located on either a wall or ceiling, often in a central hallway. If it is in the basement, it will be part of the air-handler unit, usually by your furnace. In this case, look for a panel or door (sometimes marked “Filter”) mounted near the blower motor. In either location, the panel or grate can either slide off or easily be removed with a screwdriver.

    3) Clean or Replace Your Filter:

Once you have located the filter, check to see if it is disposable, or intended to be cleaned and reused. If the filter is disposable, simply discard and replace with a new one, taking care to match the arrows with the direction of the air flow. If it is a reusable filter, cleaning instructions are usually printed on the filter itself. In most cases, cleaning involves simply rinsing the filter with a garden hose and allowing it to dry throughly before placing back in the unit.

    4) Once your filter has been either cleaned or replaced, secure the panels and/or grates in reverse order. Then, turn on the safety switch and restart you system.

And that’s all there is to it! Remember, a little maintenance goes a long way. Stay cool, and have a great Summer!

    June 16, 2014

MISSOULA, Mont. – Wind and solar energy companies would have an easier time leasing public lands for projects, under a bill from Montana Sen. Jon Tester.

The Public Land Renewable Energy Development Act is waiting for a spot on a committee calendar. It has support from the state’s Congressional delegation, as well as bi-partisan signees from other states. The Western Governors’ Association and National Association of Counties also support it.

According to Dave Chadwick, executive director of the Montana Wildlife Federation, wildlife conflicts are the biggest concern for renewable projects. Tester’s bill addresses that, and more.

“It’s really a win-win-win for wildlife conservation for hunting opportunity, and for energy companies,” said Chadwick. “It’s also a win for local communities, because the program also includes an element of impact assistance.”

Chadwick added the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management would have funding to inventory possible development regions to make assessments about wildlife conflicts, and how they could be reduced.

The bill was part of a package of legislation blocked by the Senate last month. Chadwick said he hadn’t heard any opposition to the bill by itself.

“The political environment right now is challenging,” said Chadwick. “But something with this kind of broad, bi-partisan support hopefully can pass in Congress.”

Sen. Tester has held local meetings about the legislation to boost support, in hopes that the bill will be placed on a calendar soon.

Read the Public Land Renewable Energy Development Act, as submitted to the Library of Congress.

    Great Locations for Wind Turbines

Wind turbines are utilized for a number of factors yet the main factor is to generate electricity from the wind. This might sound hard but it is possible. You experience electricity from the wind whenever an individual runs past you rapidly. A 2nd after they pass you can feel the wind from them going by. This wind that you feel if generated in a fantastic amount can be converted into power. You might have viewed the tall wind turbines filling in the fields when you drive by. There is the older classic model windmill that aided to crush grain when the windmill blades would turn, it would certainly turn a mechanism inside which was affixed to a tool that would certainly squash grain for flour. There are a number of various locations that are ideal for the wind power and relying on where they are regarding how much energy they create.

OffShore Turbines can be positioned offshore in order to generate energy from wind in the air and from the water. They don’t bother the deem much when they are out on the water and the sound that they make can not be heard ashore. The average wind rate is greater on the water due to the fact that the water has much less surface area roughness and could use every part of power from the wind. There are numerous various places today that you could see wind turbines offshore and there are much more building in the future. The one primary issue with folks and generators is the noise they make. It is constant and irritating to some. The other grievance is that they are high and not pleasurable to check out.

While all of these are true the main reason for wind turbines is to discover a choice to making use of nonrenewable fuel sources and various other non-renewable sources to generate our energy. When a tower is built offshore it might set you back even more money in the long run because the towers should be greater so there will certainly be no limitations. Turbines gain access to power via undersea cable which could utilize higher voltage direct current. The sea salt could additionally cut down on the length of time these wind turbines stay in shape.

Near Shore These generators can be viewed yet not listened to. They are on water so they can create adequate electricity compared with being absolutely on the land. Due to the fact that the sea shore lines are thought about to be quite windy due to the tides can be found in and the wind on the water, it becomes the perfect area for a wind turbine. There are issues and interested in how wild animals is using these towers and zones for their nesting and habitats. There is another worry that the coastline wind farms are not in the very best attractions of those who desire ahead to the coast line to check out. It ends up being a sight to see and listen to the generation of energy via these wind mills. The dimension of the towers can be marginal but this induces debate too given that the smaller sized the tower the lesser quantity of electricity to generate.

Off shore and near shore are the choices we have. There are advantages and disadvantages to each one. We have to analyze the outcomes with the problems to view which method could be best for every person.

Energy security: An excuse for fracking in Europe?

A creative protest action by Greenpeace is drawing attention to the ominous developments of fracking in the United Kingdom. Fossil fuel companies and the government are pushing for industrial-scale domestic shale gas and oil exploitation while hiding behind the shield of “energy security”. The international civil organisation is protesting against an upcoming law that would allow horizontal drilling for natural gas under British homes without the property owners’ permission.

The activists mimicked fracking company workers when they approached the prime minister’s home and set up a fence line around it. The information board on the fence warns you that they are just drilling under your home, and if you have complaints, you should call this number which is in fact the phone number of David Cameron’s office.  A compensatory check for 50 pound sterlings was also left by the entrance. According to the bill, this sum is the upper limit of drilling compensations for the landowners.

    Caging the bear through fracking?

    What is fracking?

In just several months, the ship of Cameron’s coalition government turned with swelling sails to fracking waters. What is behind this rush? Did the ongoing crisis in Ukraine cause so much concern about energy security that decision makers throughout Europe became so eager to follow the overseas example? If the pipelines from the East are running through a civil-war stricken failed state, maybe it’s reasonable to decrease energy-dependance from that direction.

They are eager in the United Kingdom for sure. Politicians and representatives from the fossil fuel companies released a whole barrage of statements about how fracking is desirable and the future of energy in England. It doesn’t seem to matter how much sceptical energy experts are trying to lessen the elevated mood, 10 Downing Street is crazy for shale gas.

Curiously, the United Kingdom is among the countries least dependent on imported natural gas in Europe. Still, up to 15 percent of its energy needs come from outside sources. Imported energy costs are bad for finances, and it gets only worse on the continent. By 2030, Europe will import 80 percent of its oil and gas. Twenty-one members of the EU out of 28 import natural gas from Russia. Some countries can import as much as 80 percent of their energy needs in the form of fossil fuels from the same source.

What can you do if you are British and don’t want to feed the landgrabbing bear more than now? Well, you can build more nuclear power plants (just make it sure that it’s not Rosatom which does it) — hardly an eco-friendly solution. You can burn more coal, but you will fill your carbon emission quotas in no time, and it’s pretty to hard to imagine a new army of coal miners in the same country where the government cracked down on miner unions so hard just thirty years ago. Or you can replace imported natural gas… with natural gas from domestic sources.

Fossil fuels just won’t go away by themselves

The template is on the other side of the Atlantic. The US had became a fossil fuel exporter in just a decade. The key was industrial level fracking. Now don’t make any mistake about it: environmentalists hoped not so long ago that a shortage of fossil fuel sources would force the green energy revolution sooner or later. Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be the case. The global energy industry calculates that they can rely upon fossil fuels for decades if not centuries. If we don’t count shale gas and oil, we still have unimagineable amount of  methane in the Siberian permafrost, just a few meters underground. Frozen methane is deposited on the continental shelves and coal-bed methane is another possibility, just to name a couple of examples. Humanity can heat the planet with carbon emission until the next ice age. The prospect is there with all the climate change implications. We haven’t even mentioned the oil- and natural gas-derivates among an army of products right in our households yet. It’s just not the green way.

Taking the American way — fracking — is not so straightforward for Europe, even if we don’t count the resistance of green parties, civil society, and so on. Even the most sanguine expectations don’t bargain for more than a 10 percent share of shale gas and oil in the energy supply of Europe by 2030, hardly an amount to substitute Eastern fossil fuels. To reach that otherwise unrealistic goal, literally hundreds of wells have to be drilled throughout Europe every year. Cost estimates warn us as well that the US fracking industry wasn’t born overnight; it took decades of researching, experiments and investments to support the shale gas boom of today. Shale gas from Europe will be never as cheap as natural gas from Russia, and the energy market will most likely follow its own logic and replace the even more expensive gas from different sources like Quatar or the Maghreb first instead.

    What the frack…?

So what’s the rush in the UK then? The increased tax income through fracking companies must be a very appealing prospect in these times. In my opinion, shale gas is coming (sadly) at any rate, and the company that can gain experience and perfect the technology will be one step ahead of its rivals in Europe. The United Kingdom can be a trial ground and maybe a good starting point for British fracking companies that are targeting the European shale gas market, hence we have this outrageous bill in the homeland of liberal democracies, and the land enclosures… We need a revolution in energy but certainly not this kind.
