The discussion involving the future of wind energy in Huron County is reaching a pinnacle.
It seems that more people are more informed and have an opinion about wind turbines than ever before. Of course, that is understandable considering there is a turbine in every backyard.
Well, we jest when we say that. But the county has 328 turbines, and the total could reach 500 with plans for three more wind parks. That is far more than any other location in the state.
We always have believed residents need to be informed, have an opportunity to have their say about wind energy, and then decide if their community should continue to add wind turbines.
The decision is not being decided in Lansing, and it is not being decided by a power company. These are our decisions to make.
It appears voters will have a chance to make a decision in Meade Township, with an election scheduled for May.
Residents cannot ask for anything more than a ballot issue where the majority will rule. In a democracy, there’s no better fitting conclusion than to have a vote settle the dissension.
We urge our readers to stay informed, so they can make the best decision possible for their community. Challenge local officials. Attend a meeting. Write a letter to the newspaper.
The more informed we are, the better decisions we will make.
Turbines have changed our landscape forever.
We now must decide if those changes should go even further, as there are plans for hundreds of more turbines in the years ahead.
Working together, we trust we will make the best decisions for Huron County and the Upper Thumb.
Our View: Stay informed on wind issues
