Alpha Rho among 6 in Fitchburg buying solar energy

FITCHBURG — Plastic box manufacturer Alpha Rho is one of six Fitchburg manufacturers that will buy power from a new solar plant on Pleasant Street in Lunenburg operated by NuGen Capital Management.

NuGen struck a deal with the North Central Massachusetts Development Corp. to sell its net metering credits from the plant to local manufacturers.

Alpha Rho’s decision to use renewable energy at its Fitchburg plant would allow the company to save money on energy bills while also reducing the region’s ecological footprint.

Alpha Rho, which plastic boxes and novelty plastic items, is among the six manufacturers from the Fitchburg area to take advantage of this locally produced energy. The other five are: Rocheleau Tool & Die; Steel-Fab Inc.; Cado Co.; Select Engineering; and Boutwell, Owens & Co. Inc.

The 20-year agreement will save the companies $1 million or more in energy costs over the term of the agreement, according to the North Central Massachusetts Development Corp.

David Tall, president of Alpha Rho, said, “We are happy to be part of the rapidly growing green energy business in Massachusetts. It not only helps us run our plastics molding plant efficiently, but it is also the right thing to do. Whether it’s through recycling 90 percent of our waste, signing up to purchase green power, or manufacturing biodegradable green plastics, Alpha Rho is doing its bit to make a big-picture difference.”
