YOUR MONEY: Car Repairs

Mechanics spill the tricks of what you should know when it comes to repairing your car without breaking the bank.

NOVEMBER 6, 2014– Mechanics spill the tricks of what you should know when it comes to repairing your car without breaking the bank. Local mechanics say routine maintenance will extend the life of your vehicle, but knowing your car will help you save money. The average cost of an oil change can range from 22 to 50 dollars depending on your car. Synthetic oil ranges from 40 to 70 dollars. Mechanics say checking your oil is easy and having clean oil can give your car better fuel economy and extend the life of the engine. AAA recommends consumers change their oil between 5,000 and 7,500 miles depending on the car. New engine oil is generally light gold to brown and should be nearly transparent. Synthetic oil is darker. If the oil is milky and thick or has a strong fuel odor, that’s an indication that there may be a mechanical problem. According to AAA, you should always check your air filters if they’re only slightly dirty you can clean them by tapping it with the bottom side down. If your air filter is dirty it can lower your gas mileage. Replacing your air filter may cost about 15 dollars on average.
